JICS staff surveyed a mine treatment area for landmines and UXOs

From June 22nd, 2003 to July 4th 2003, the Research Project for Developing Mechanical Demining Machines in Afghanistan in FY 2002 was implemented. Nine participants from manufacturers took part in the local survey to understand the situation for land mine clearance activity in Afghanistan.

It is supposed that more than 10 millions of landmines are buried in the area of 800 square km. Actually more than 300 people are injured or killed by mines per month.

It seems to take a long time and efforts to clear all of the mines because manual clearance is mainly used in Afghanistan. To improve the efficiency and security of mine clearance, many concerned organizations are searching further mechanized Demining Machines and paying attention to Japanese manufacturers. However, it is also necessary to consider the soil and climatic condition and the state of mine contaminated area.

In this survey, 4 manufacturers who were selected by the selection committee implemented the survey to understand many kinds of situations for mine clearance which is suitable to the local environment. They completed the test of machines in FY 2003.
