This project aims to build peace by 1. reducing violence through weapons collection and 2. improving living conditions through development assistance. Residents are encouraged to surrender their weapons voluntarily, and after it is acknowledged that all weapons in the community are collected, the community receives development assistance according to their needs. The target areas are Battambang and Kampong Thom Provinces. The main activities in this Project are the following:
The WDP Project does not offer development in exchange for weapons; development is only provided to consolidate the community's willingness to peace, which is demonstrated by surrendering all weapons possessed by the residents. For further information, please see: |

At a workshop JSAC and its partners repeatively conduct awareness raising activities on small arms to the residents, and encourage the voluntary surrender of their illegal small arms. Each workshop is held for 1-2 days, explaining the dangers of small arms, the New Arms Law, and about the advantages of a peaceful society without weapons. The police and military personnel also join the workshops, promoting the building of trust between the residents. This trust is especially important for the residents to be able to feel secure in handing over their weapons . |
Workshop participant with his material All workshop participants receive printed material, for their reference after the workshop, and also for sharing information with others who were not able to attend. Illiterate residents can get help from those who are literate, to help them understand. The illustrations and photographs also help to make the material more attractive and easy to understand. Police Training (1) Police training is provided to strengthen the capacity of the police in maintaining community security, and to improve public perception of the police. This contributes to the surrender of weapons by creating an environment that citizens feel comfortable in handing in their weapons. In cooperation with the Training Department of the Ministry of Interior and Cambodian NGO staff, 720 police officers have been trained on important topics such as human rights, criminal investigation procedures and Arms Law. 454 more will complete the 11-day course by the end of Jan 2007. |
